IBM Cognos Training Offering
Infolink offers mentoring or training courses on the IBM Cognos business intelligence (BI) tools, TM1, and the ETL (extract, transform, and load) tool Data Manager. The tracks and courses below explain our recommended tracks; however, we can work with your organization to customize a path specific to your needs.
Three BI Learning Paths to Success
Infolink offers three BI training tracks designed to set your organization up for success. Your choice of training depends on the strategic objectives of your BI implementation.
For example, we can adjust a learning path based on your own experience with IBM Cognos. If you are brand new to IBM Cognos, the trainer focuses on fundamentals. If you are upgrading from Impromptu or ReportNet, the trainer points out major functionality and application architecture changes where applicable. If you are upgrading from an earlier version of IBM Cognos, new features and performance enhancements are identified and explored in detail. Regardless of your organization's starting point, Infolink assures that its trainers are versed on all the features of IBM Cognos available based on the version you are implementing.
The course numbering can be used for ease of reference but does not necessarily reflect the order in which courses need to be taken. If you are a SunGard Banner customer, please also see Infolink Training Offering for SunGard Banner Customers.
The goal of BI Starter Track is to provide new users with a correct understanding of the IBM Cognos BI toolset and get them up and running in IBM Cognos quickly.
We then recommend new users explore IBM Cognos functionality before entering the BI Relational Track. This set of courses is designed to solidify understanding of IBM Cognos and introduce new tools and functions into your organization.
The final track of the series is BI Dimensional Track. These advanced courses are intended for clients who are implementing IBM Cognos PowerCubes as part of their BI reporting and/or data warehousing strategy.
The goal of our TM1 Track is to teach you how to use IBM Cognos tools to help make better business decisions. Integrating actual, budget, and forecast data into one system enables decision makers to monitor performance and make informed decisions as your business environment changes.
Infolink also offers an intense three-day course on the IBM Cognos ETL tool, Data Manager as our ETL Track.
BI Starter Track
When beginning a BI project, it is crucial that the IBM Cognos environment be installed and configured properly to meet the demands and rigors of design, build, test, and training.
We recommend at least two separate environments in order to isolate the development activities from the production responsibilities. We understand that clients may be limited on hardware and software licenses, so we've collected a series of best practices to support a collapsed environment as well.

BI Dimensional Track
Dimensional data is data that can be viewed using multiple attributes with a variety of aggregation levels associated with them. Dimensional data also allows a user to drill up and down dimension levels, viewing the measures aggregated to that level. There are two types of dimensional data within IBM Cognos- Cubes and Dimensionally Modeled Relational (DMR) Data. Cubes are pre-calculated and limit complexity for ad hoc users; they provide faster response time when compared to relational reporting and DMR but the data is not available in real time. With DMR, aggregations are not pre-calculated, so the data is available in real time but the query costs may slow down the user experience.
Because of the significant benefit IBM Cognos' dimensional data offers to organizations, it is important to stay up-to-date on the latest features of IBM Cognos dimensional data capabilities. These courses are designed to help the developer and business user get the most out of dimensional data.
D1: PowerCube Development in Transformer Training (2 days)
Students learn the steps involved to create and publish dimensional data to be used within the IBM Cognos studios. Course content includes the variety of options available to create cubes using Transformer. The focus and practice exercises are on the most widely accepted method(s).
Corresponding IBM Cognos Roles: BI Administrator, BI Professional, BI Business Analyst
Prerequisites: Previous Framework Manager experience is encouraged to maximize the benefit of this class.
D2: Dimensionally Modeled Relational Data Mentoring (1 day)

Topics such as grouping, filtering, aggregations, and formatting are discussed, demonstrated and practiced. The course also demonstrates how data can be presented graphically or through crosstabs, quickly and easily. This course differs from the Relational Track Query Studio course because dimensions and levels are used in addition to relational data that uses query subjects and query items. Organizations typically select only one of the Query Studio classes and believe that provides enough content for them to succeed.
Corresponding IBM Cognos Roles: BI Administrator, BI Professional, BI Professional Author, BI Advanced Business Author, BI Business Author
Prerequisites: A functional IBM Cognos PowerCube or Framework Manager DMR model to support the customized training. This is typically developed as part of "Power Cube Development in Transformer" or "Dimensionally Modeled Relational Data Mentoring".
D4: Analysis Studio Training (1 day)
This course covers the fundamentals of Analysis Studio and how to construct an IBM Cognos analysis, manipulate the format, and create "drillable" reports and queries based on that analysis. Through lecture, discussion, and exercises, students learn how to understand dimensional data and how it can be used to make better business decisions. Techniques such as ranking, filtering, aggregations, and charting are demonstrated and exercised.
Corresponding IBM Cognos Roles: BI Administrator, BI Professional, BI Advanced Business Author, BI Business Analyst
Prerequisites: A functional IBM Cognos PowerCube. This is typically developed as part of "Power Cube Development in Transformer".
D5: Report Studio with Dimensional Data Training (1 day)
Students expand their knowledge of key Report Studio features as they create reports with dimensional data. Crosstab and list reports are used to exercise Report Studio functionality in the dimensional report context. Dimensional reporting concepts, functions, and hierarchies are presented as report development topics such as filtering, prompting, aggregations, and calculations are discussed, demonstrated and practiced.
This course differs from the Relational Track Report Studio courses because dimensions and levels (and dimensional functions such as "tuples" and "slicers") are used, as opposed to relational data that uses query subjects and query items. This requires a significant paradigm shift for even the most experienced SQL-based report writer. The course culminates with a business case workshop.
Corresponding IBM Cognos Roles: BI Administrator, BI Professional, BI Professional Author
Prerequisites:
1. A functional IBM Cognos PowerCube or Framework Manager DMR model to support the customized training. This is typically developed as part of "Power Cube Development in Transformer" or "Dimensionally Modeled Relational Data Mentoring".
2. Report Studio Parts 1 and 2 or equivalent experience
